Westchester Community College has often been referred to as “Harvard on the Hudson” and WCC’s Cybersecurity Program proved the point during the regional stage of the National Collegiate Cyber Defense Competition. Beating out the likes of Harvard, NYU and Columbia, WCC’s team was the only community college to qualify for the Northeast Regional round held March 16-18 at the University of New Hampshire. Though the team fell short of winning the regional completion (won by the University of Buffalo) it did finish as a finalist along with Champlain College, Northeastern University, Rochester Institute of Technology, Stevens Institute of Technology, University at Albany, University of Maine, University of New Hampshire and West Point.
WCC Alumnus John Watkins ‘01, the coach of the team, as well as the cybersecurity curriculum chair (pictured left), could not be more proud of the team’s accomplishment. Watkins noted that as a community college he only has students together for two years while the competition has their teams together for four years. “I am so impressed with these guys. They put to shame some IT operations around the world.”
Watkins hopes to have a reunion of his cyber graduates in the fall, so cybersecurity alums, keep your eyes open for a reunion invite towards the end of summer!
